Stowe Manor’s History

Stowe Manor, a majestic 1920s Southern mansion nestled in Belmont, North Carolina, stands as a testament to a vibrant era when "cotton was king" and the textile industry was flourishing. The original owners of Stowe Manor were pioneers in Belmont’s textile manufacturing and banking sectors, embodying the spirit of early entrepreneurial ambition.

Designed by the esteemed architect Hugh White for Mr. Samuel Pinkney Stowe and his family, Stowe Manor was first constructed in 1922. Tragically, just before the family could move in, the house was consumed by fire. Undeterred, it was rebuilt in 1924, where it remained the cherished residence of the Stowe family until 1967. The manor features approximately 10,000 square feet of heated living space, including a spacious first floor of 4,500 square feet and a second floor originally designed with six bedrooms plus an additional bedroom for a live-in employee.

The manor was a hub of family life and social events, hosting everything from intimate family dinners and reunions to the eagerly awaited annual Easter Egg Hunt. Its inviting atmosphere was enhanced by beamed ceilings, a grand fireplace, and a welcoming front porch swing, making it a beloved gathering place for the Stowe family and their friends.

Sam Stowe, the grandson of S.P. Stowe, fondly recalls the grandeur of the manor’s parties and holiday celebrations through the eyes of a child. Fueled by a deep appreciation for the home’s architectural beauty and a desire to preserve its legacy, Sam and his wife Martha initiated a rehabilitation project in 1994. This effort transformed Stowe Manor into a premier wedding and special event venue, marking its debut as an ASID Designer house, where each room was uniquely decorated by local designers.

For the next 27 years, Stowe Manor thrived as an event venue until it was sold in 2021 to David and Wendy Hostetler. The Hostetlers, who had long admired the home, embarked on a comprehensive two-year renovation, completing the project in 2024. Both David and Wendy, local entrepreneurs with deep roots in the area, now enjoy living in and entertaining at the home. Their commitment to preserving and celebrating Stowe Manor ensures that this historic estate will continue to be a cherished landmark for years to come.
