Soffit Repairs and Squirrel Eviction: Early in January, the focus was on repairing the soffits around the manor, which had been damaged by clogged gutters and active squirrel infestations. Unfortunately, several squirrels were evicted from their nests as repairs commenced. The Brazilian crew, known for their expertise in historic home restoration, took charge of this delicate task.
Garage Soffit and Roof Perimeter Repairs: As the work on the soffit continued, the team discovered extensive wood rot around the garage soffit and tile roof perimeter. The skilled Brazilian carpenters meticulously corrected these issues, ensuring that the garage would be as good as new. Following the repairs, plans were made to repaint and install new copper gutters, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic of the structure.
Tree Work and Pruning: The grounds of Stowe Manor also saw significant changes as many dead, dying, or damaged trees were removed. The healthy trees received professional pruning to maintain their health and structure, ensuring the landscape complemented the historic property. It’s a ongoing process to care for the remaining original trees.
Garage Soffit Completion and Tile Roof Repair: The Brazilian crew completed the garage soffit improvements, addressing the extensive wood rot and repairing the tile roof. This crew, recognized for their mastery in working on historic houses, brought their expertise from Massachusetts to Stowe Manor, ensuring the repairs were of the highest quality. With the soffit work complete, the garage was prepped for painting, gutter installation, and the addition of new custom carriage doors. The original carriage house doors were long gone, but new ones were installed to replicate the original look. How rare it must of been to have a four-car garage in 1924!

Library French Doors Restoration: The original French doors from the library, removed during the 1994 ASID Designer House event, were discovered in the basement after nearly 30 years. Weighing over 100 pounds each and covered in dirt and mold, these historic doors were lovingly cleaned and re-hung, restoring a key architectural feature to the manor.
Wooden Balustrade System Removal: The deteriorated wooden balustrade system were unfortunately beyond repair. After 100 years of exposure to the elements they suffered severe wood rot. A new balustrade system was custom made to match the original. It was fabricated in Kansas out of solid Cypress wood and shipped to Belmont to be carefully assembled. Prior to reinstalling the new balustrade system, plans were made to replace and repair the original flat roof systems that the balustrade rests upon.
Flat Roof Replacement: The replacement of the four flat roofs at Stowe Manor began in earnest. The original Ludowici green terra-cotta tile roof had been replaced by the previous owners, but the flat roofs still required attention. Instead of opting for modern EDPM rubber roofs, the decision was made to use the traditional three-layer hot tar, composite, and gravel method, known for its durability and historical accuracy. The roofing was handled by H&S Roofing, with Parnell, a foreman with decades of experience, leading the project. This is not an easy roof to install and very few companies still do it due to the difficulty.
Gutters Installation: New copper gutters were installed on the garage and flat roofs, meticulously chosen to complement the manor's historical aesthetic while ensuring durability against the elements.
march 2022
Completion of Flat Roofs and Water Damage Repairs: By mid-March, three of the four flat roofs were completed, with the fourth roof over the Porte Cochere following shortly after. This involved significant work in the crawl space and basement, ensuring the manor's foundations were solid. Over 45 structural floor joints and beams were replaced. Many columns were added for additional support and the floors were finally leveled where they had sagged over the years.
